Bengaluru back in the league

Players' auction to be held on Sunday
Last Updated 03 August 2017, 21:06 IST
After a three-year hiatus, the Karnataka Premier League will witness a team from Bengaluru in its sixth edition that is likely to begin from September 1.

The T20 tournament, which was revived in 2014 after a gap of three years, didn’t have a place for a city based franchise for three seasons for varying reasons.

Kalyani Motors, a car dealing company, have won the bid for the Bengaluru team and  the new side will be called the Kalyani Bengaluru.

The organisers had decided to promote the game more in the moffusil areas and no side from Bengaluru was included in the list of teams when the league was revamped. “The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has planned initiatives to attract more crowd in Bengaluru. We will invite children and try to provide a great experience for the fans. Even the tickets are priced moderately to draw large number of people,” said Vinay Mrityunjaya, spokesperson, KSCA, at a press conference here on Thursday.

Vinay added that the schedule of the league will be announced in the next couple of days. Rockstars and Mangalore United will not be part of the league for the next five years.

The Chinnaswamy stadium here will host the inaugural few games while Hubballi and Mysuru are the other venues.

Fresh auctions

Karbon Smarphones will remain as the title sponsors for the league and the players’ auction will be held here at the KSCA on Sunday. Unlike last couple of years, the franchises have not retained any player this time and it will be a fresh auction.

Anti-corruption units

Santosh Menon, assistant secretary, KSCA, said that there will be an anti-corruption unit monitoring the league. “We have consulted the Board of Control of Cricket in India’s (BCCI) anti-corruption unit and we have a strict team which will observe the players, dressing rooms and the matches throughout the league,” he explained.

A total of 25 matches will be played and it was learnt that the KSCA was in talks with Star Sports to strike a deal to broadcast the event.
