Two cadets of the prestigious Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, died within three days after participating in a 10-km run as a part of their training routine.

While Cadet Deepak Sharma (22), who is from Bhatinda in Punjab died on Aug 18, the second cadet, Navin Kumar Chhetri (23), from West Bengal passed away on Sunday night.

They were part of a team of IMA cadets, who took part in a running exercise named ‘Pahla Kadam’, in the Badshahi Bagh area of Saharanpur district in Uttar Pradesh. During the exercise, seven cadets fell ill due to dehydration. They were administered first aid by the medical officer on the spot. While most of them were sent to the Military Hospital in Dehradun, Sharma was rushed to the nearest medical centre (Lehman Hospital) at Vikasnagar because his condition was critical.

“He succumbed to exhaustion and dehydration and passed away at 1.30 pm on August 18, despite best efforts made by the doctors,” the defence ministry said here in a statement.

Chhetri, too, was in the military hospital from where he was referred to another Dehradun hospital where the best medical treatment by specialised doctors was provided. But despite the efforts made by the doctors, Cadet Chhetri
passed away at 11:50 pm, it added.

The remaining cadets have been treated at the military hospital and are stable.Such runs called route marches are held from time to time by the IMA to boost the cadets stamina and endurance.
