BARC implements hi-tech system to provide storm warning

To provide environmental safety at Department of Atomic Energy sites, the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research scientists here have implemented Simulating Waves Near Shore (SWAN) system model here at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu for prediction of extreme waves during stormy events for providing advance warning.

As the coastal environment in the south east coast of the country is frequently prone to cyclones, storm--surges and extreme waves, the SWAN model will predict the waves height in the ocean during bad weather conditions.

Bhabha Atomic Reseach Centre (BARC) sources here on Sunday said that the SWAN was tested by performing simulations in a number of fair weather and stormy events in different seasons.

Accordingly, the time series of simulated significant wave heights are compared with the Wave Rider Buoy observation situated near the Union Territory of Puducherry and Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu.

Results of predictions of fair weather and stormy events in all four seasons indicated that the height of the waves is about 15% more than the usual observations.
