Centre set to conduct joint check on mines

The mining ministry has formed several teams comprising of officials from the Indian Buraeu of Mines, ISRO and the National Remote Sensing Agency for this task. For Karnataka, the ministry is sending three teams.

The ministry had roped in ISRO and NRSA to map illeal mining in the country and it found 160 illegal mines operating in Karnataka. The mines ministry has also sought help from shipping ministry to check iron ore exported and transportation of ore from mines to ports to find out the quantity of export of ore coming from illegal mines.

The ministry has sought help from the home ministry to deploy para military forces in case the state government officials prevent them from inspecting. The mines ministry had faced similar sitaution in Karnataka and Orissa not long ago.
