Carmakers cheer as sales boom in September

Maruti logs 9.3% rise in sales, as Hyundai zooms at 17.4%

The month of September has brought smiles on the faces of carmakers, as many of them have posted impressive sales figures during the period.

Maruti Suzuki India reported 9.3% increase in total sales at 1,63,071 units in September, having sold 1,49,143 units in the same month, last year.

Maruti’s domestic sales stood at 1,51,400 units, up 10.3% from 1,37,321 units in September 2016. Sales of mini segment cars, including Alto and WagonR, witnessed a 13.3% decline to 38,479 units during the month under review, from 44,395 units in September last year, MSI said.

It further said sales of the compact segment comprising Swift, Estilo, Dzire and Baleno jumped by 44.7% to 72,804 units, against 50,324 units earlier. Sales of mid-sized sedan Ciaz declined by 14.4% to 5,603 units during the month.

Sales of utility vehicles, including Ertiga and Vitara Brezza, increased by 8% to 19,900 units.

Hyundai Motor India (HMIL) reported a 17.4% increase in domestic sales at 50,028 units in September. The company had sold 42,605 units in September 2016.

HMIL stated that September sales were boosted by success of the newly launched Verna, of which over 6,000 units were sold during last month.

Homegrown Tata Motors reported a 25% increase in domestic sales at 53,965 units in September. The company had sold 43,031 units in September 2016.

Honda Cars India (HCIL) reported a 21% increase in domestic sales at 18,257 units in September, having sold 15,034 units in the same month last year.

Last month, the company sold 504 units of small car Brio, 3,001 units of premium hatchback Jazz, 2,561 units of compact sedan Amaze and 6,010 units of mid-sized sedan City.

The company also sold 4,834 units of its new compact SUV, WRV. Besides, the BRV saw sales of 1,298 units. Sales of SUV CRV stood at 31 units and Accord Hybrid at 18 units last month.

German auto major Volkswagen reported a 17% increase in September sales in India at 4,603 units. The company had sold 3,929 units in the same month last year.
