Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo said that a high-level delegation will visit Lakshadweep as a part of an effort to re-establish the trade relations with the Mangaluru Old Port (Bunder).

Performing the ground-breaking ceremony for the development of Mangaluru Old Port, Lobo said that during the delegation meet between October 29 and 31, Lakshadweep administration will be persuaded to restart trade transactions with Mangaluru. The island had a good trade relation with Mangaluru earlier, which was discontinued over a period of time.

Also, a request will be placed before Lakshadweep to construct a jetty at Mangaluru Old Port at a cost of Rs 70 crore, which could be solely dedicated to the Lakshadweep-Mangaluru trade transactions. An informal communication has been made in this regard with the MP of Lakshadweep.

Rs one crore for development

The state government fund of Rs one crore will be utilised towards the development of Mangaluru Old Port. Under the funds, the road from Hamilton Circle (State Bank Circle) to Old Port will be concretised, Lobo said. He, meanwhile, performed the ground-breaking ceremony towards the same.

Also, Rs 100 crore has been sanctioned towards the development of a fisheries port. The state and the Central governments have provided the grants in the ratio of 60:40. The integrated development of the port will be taken up with the funds.
