Karnataka High Court has asked the BBMP to present a detailed action plan on creating solid waste management plants in all its wards by December 8.

A division bench of Justices BS Patil and Nagarathna heard a petition filed by Kavitha Shankar and others charging the BBMP of dumping solid waste in the quarries of Bagalur, Mittiganahalli and Bellahalli.

The rotting waste causes serious health hazards to people in nearby villages, the petitioners claimed.

The BBMP had responded saying it had set up ward committees -as directed by the high court- and they would identify suitable places in the wards to create solid waste management plants.

To ensure appropriate solid waste management, the court asked BBMP to create a 'ward micro plan' for each wards as suggested by the petitioners, asking it to complete the exercise within ten days.

Effective functioning

In its order, the court has also asked BBMP to compile all its orders on solid waste management in a booklet to help effective functioning of the ward committees according to the court orders and to ensure proper solid waste management.

The civic authorities should also submit the ward micro plan prepared by each ward within ten days. It shall also ensure convening of ward meetings on or before November 30.

The bench asked BBMP to take this activity on a priority basis and submit the detailed action plan on the next hearing on December 8.
