Last Updated 15 November 2017, 19:32 IST

Hours after Zimbabwe Defence Forces took control of the civic and government institutions of the country and "secured" president Robert Mugabe , New Delhi's envoy to Harare, R Masaqui, said that Indian citizens in the Southern African nation were all safe.

He also said that Zimbaweans of Indian origin were also safe.

"Situation in Harare is calm. Embassy staff, Indian Community, both PIO & Expat are safe. No reason for concern and worry," Masaqui posted on Twitter.

Nearly 500 Indian citizens live in Zimbabwe - mostly professionals working in fields like computer software, accountancy and banking.

Besides, Zimbabwe has around 9,000 people having Indian origin. The Embassy of India in Harare has just four Indian officials, including the Ambassador.
