Pune lift crash kills 7 workers

At least seven people were killed when a lift carrying workers crashed while being pulled out of a tunnel at Indapur in Pune district on Monday.

Reports reaching Mumbai said the victims were migrant workers at the tunnel site for the Nira-Bheema river inter-linking project. Seven bodies have been recovered so far. Two more bodies have been located. More casualties have not been ruled out.

Top officials of the Water Resources Department, which was implementing the project, have rushed to the spot.

Initial reports said that the incident took place around 6 pm. The workers were being lifted out of the tunnel when the wire broke, crashing the lift. The crane too tumbled.

On an average, nearly 150 to 200 people work at the site.
