DCP (Law and Order) B R Ravikanthe Gowda who led the raid told Deccan Herald that the raid was conducted by a contingent of 80 armed cops following allegations of use of drugs, cellphones and other irregularities within the jail premises. The raid that was launched at 10.15 pm lasted for five hours, he added.

Barring women, all the 973 male inmates were scanned and their cells were searched. The police recovered pipes used to smoke drugs, headphones and cards. However, no case has been registered.  Even though, the main gate was opened for the police, the jail guards allegedly tried to restrain them by closing the second gate. The gate was opened only after the intervention of Chief Superintendent of the Prisons J Veerabhadraswamy.
