A 21-year-old woman, who suffered inhuman treatment at the hands of her relatives as they believed she was possessed, was rescued by the police on Saturday.
The victim is Yellavva Nagappa Bisukalvaddar, a tribal woman and a resident of the town, who was suffering from mental illness.
The woman, whose hands were tied with a rope, was being dragged to a black magician on Jat Road to exorcise her of the the 'evil sprit'.
She was admitted to a hospital in Athani by the police and later shifted to the district hospital in Belagavi for treatment.
An onlooker informed the media about the incident. Soon a few television channels aired news about the girl's plight. The jurisdictional police rushed to the spot and rescued the girl.
