Superbikes and cars vied for drag-racing glory at the Jakkur aerodrome on Saturday.

Engines roared as contestants pushed their vehicles to full throttle on the first day of the Bengaluru edition of the annual India Speed Week.

Unlike regular circuit races, drag races are short, with an event lasting not more than 15 to 20 seconds.

In the bike category, two contenders, kitted out in safety suits and helmets, compete against each other over a distance of 402 metres.

Drag racing calls for alertness and speed as even a fraction of a second can make the difference between victory and defeat.

Ayesha Inamdar, one of the participants, is no stranger to danger. Training to be a commercial pilot, she says aviation is riskier and more thrilling, but the speed of drag racing is something she loves.

"My friends were all into drag racing and I used to accompany them for practice," Ayesha told DH.
