Assembly polls: Ivan seeks 12 Cong tickets for Christians

MLC and chief whip of the government in the Legislative Council, Ivan D'Souza, urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to issue Congress party tickets to Christians in at least 12 Assembly constituencies in the upcoming elections to provide adequate representation as the community constitutes 4% of the population in Karnataka.

He was in the city to hold a review meeting of the functioning of the Minorities Welfare department and Minorities Development Corporation, on Tuesday.

Addressing the gathering during a Christmas celebrations, organised by  Chraisthara Pragathipara Samsthe at Wesley Church, D'Souza said, he has been pressuring the government to change the Christians Development Council into Christians Development Authority.

"Christians and Muslims put together form 17% of the population in Karnataka and the communities should get proper representation in the legislative bodies, based on their percentage. The SC and ST communities get allocation of funds proportionate to their percentage in the population, in the Budget. Similarly, the minority communities also should get good budgetary allocation," he said.

"The council is not empowered to take decisions. Even though there is money, the council can't spend it. The funds have to be spent through the Minorities Welfare department and the Minorities Development Authority," he pointed out.

He said, the state government had earmarked Rs 150 crore for various projects for Christians in the
budget. "I am heading a committee to see if the benefits have reached the community people. So, I am visiting each district to review the progress. There are always complaints that the benefits do not reach the beneficiaries. I have already visited 27 districts," he said.
