The BBMP has decided to temporarily suspend white-topping of roads.  But the civic body plans to complete the work that is already under way on four stretches, including two on the Outer Ring Roads.

The decision came following a recent meeting between the mayor and Palike officials.

The civic body had taken up white-topping works  on the two Outer Ring Roads (Jnana   Bharathi to Sumanahalli and Tumkur Road to Old Madras Road), Mysore Road, Vijayanagar, Koramangala 20th Main and Hosur Road, causing severe traffic chaos along these stretches. It was all set to take up work on another 25 roads.

"There are traffic jams all over the city as a result of the unscientific selection of roads to start the work. We have decided to stop this after completing the ongoing work on the four stretches," Mayor R Sampath Raj told DH.

"Recently, when I was travelling on Hosur Road, I came across a college student who was crying because she missed her exam due to the traffic jam. In the coming days, there will be more exams and the road work may affect students. Commuters are inconvenienced and even emergency services like ambulances often find it tough to pass through," he said.

Next week, the mayor along with BBMP commissioner Manjunath Prasad and other officials plan to find a way to continue the work on the remaining 25 stretches without disturbing vehicular movement.
