The Punjab and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh on Thursday granted bail to Vikas Barala, son of Haryana BJP president Subhash Barala, who is facing trial in the case of stalking and attempted abduction of DJ Varnika Kundu.

Barala, a law student, has been in jail since August 9 last year. Varnika is the daughter of a senior Haryana bureaucrat.

High Court Justice Lisa Gill allowed bail to the accused after laying certain conditions which, among others, include that Barala will not attempt to influence the trial, nor will he make any attempt to contact the victim or her family. While seeking a time-bound probe into the case, Varnika's counsel opposed the bail on the grounds that the offences were of a serious nature.

Barala and his friend Ashish reportedly followed Varnika, tried to stop her car and attempted an abduction on August 5. There were charges that the police, after learning that the accused was the son of Haryana BJP president Subhash Barala, soft-pedalled adding relevant IPC sections. It was only after public outcry that the relevant charges were added.
