Enumerators sight 2 tigers, 3 cubs on Day 4

Participants of the statewide tiger census had to gather information on herbivorous animals on Day 4. While the first three days were dedicated for sighting of tigers and other animals, the next two days concentrated on herbivorous animals.

A total of two tigers and three cubs were sighted on Day Four in the limits of the Nagarahole and Bandipur national parks.

A tigress with her three cubs was sighted in Antharasanthe range. Three leopards were sighted at DB Kuppe range, said Manikantan, director, Tiger Project, Nagarahole National Park.

In Bandipur and Biligirirangana Betta (BRT) range, the participants could sight just one tiger near N Begur on Thursday. However, they sighted a number of herbivores and other animals. While those in Bandipur could sight 17 wild dogs and 36 bisons, those in BRT range sighted a huge python.

The enumerators also collected details on the food habits of the plant-eating animals. Speaking to DH, Madhusudan, range forest officer, Veeranahosahalli, said information on herbivorous animals in every 15-metre distance would be recorded.

Besides, details on the number of trees felled in the forests, human-animal conflict and available grasslands would be collected, he said.
