HC asks BBMP to issue ID cards to street vendors

Last Updated 18 January 2018, 19:42 IST

The Karnataka High Court directed the BBMP to issue identity cards to all surveyed street vendors before February 21.

If officials fail to issue the cards within four weeks, they will have to pay Rs 1,000 for each day of delay.

Justice Vineet Kothari was hearing a petition filed by S Babu, a street vendor from Vijayanagar, who is also the president of the Bengaluru Jilla Beedhi Vyapari Sanghatanegala Okkuta.

Babu had filed the petition in 2016, seeking a survey at the earliest and issuance of identity cards to street vendors in Bengaluru to prevent harassment.

In August 2017, the high court had sought a status report from the BBMP about the pending survey and disbursal of identity cards. Following this, the BBMP conducted a survey between September and October 2017.

Clifton Rozario, the petitioners' counsel stated, "The street vendors in Bengaluru fear that since the elections and the code of conduct are around the corner, they will lose out on the opportunity to avail ID cards."

The matter was adjourned to February 21.
