The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has scrapped the contract to build an integrated skywalk project at the Mahatma Gandhi Circle.

Following this, the Karnataka High Court has disposed of a petition that had sought quashing of the work order and the agreements between the Palike and a private agency that had won the contract.

A DH report questioning the controversial project and its potential to destroy the city's most valued heritage space had sparked an outcry.

The successful bidder for the BBMP tender, Prakash Arts Pvt Ltd, had already commenced excavation and digging for the project.

Directed by Bengaluru Development Minister K J George, this was temporarily put on hold.

Thereafter, a few social activists, who had campaigned against the steel flyover project and Krumbiegel Hall demolition, had filed a public interest litigation in the high court.

Their fight was also against projects that would destroy "the entire aesthetics of the Mahatma Gandhi Circle".
