'Opportunities must be explored'

Deputry Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis has said that women empowerment can be achieved without much difficulty in the present day scenario.

Speaking after inaugurating International Women's Day celebrations organised by Indian Red Cross Society, the deputy commissioner said that unlike the earlier times, the idea of women empowerment is supported by one and all in the society. "There are plenty of opportunities for women to shine and showcase their abilities in various fields. They should be able to explore the opportunities available before them and excel," she said. She added that the government is also supporting women in all possible ways. There is a need to become self-reliant among women, she reiterated.

The officer added that Udupi being a literate district has many number of women who are well educated. She said that empowerment cannot be imposed, however, it is the pathway that requires the active involvement of women. She said that Udupi culture is something which is embedded in the thought of women empowerment as there are numerous potentials for women to develop their personality in the region.

She said the youth, especially students, have their responsibilities to contribute to the development of the society.Women achievers from various fields were felicitated on the occasion. They included Dr Damayanti Krishna Mohan, Prem Margaret Borde, Vasanti Rao Koradkal, Shakila and Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis.

Later, speaking at a programme organised at Rajangana for Women's Day celebrations by the district administration, zilla panchayat and district Legal Services Authority, the deputy commissioner said that a woman can empower herself by making use of the available rights and also by discharging the duties efficiently. She said the Indian Constitution has empowered women by entrusting them with voting rights. But sadly, a situation has arisen wherein women are compelled to retrospect as to whether they have effectively made use of the voting rights, she said.
