Rahul targets Jaitley over PNB scam, claims daughter held legal brief for accused

Last Updated 12 March 2018, 17:30 IST

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on Monday accused Finance Minister Arun Jaitley of remaining silent on the PNB scam as his close relatives held the legal brief for diamond merchant Mehul Choksi.

"It's now revealed that our FM's silence on the PNB scam was to protect his lawyer daughter, who was paid a large retainer by the accused just a month before the SCAM became public. When other law firms of the accused have been raided by the CBI, why not hers," asked Rahul on Twitter even as the Congress kept up the heat on the Modi government on the $2 billion scam.

The Congress questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "silence" on the scam 27 days since the irregularities were first reported.

"When will the prime minister speak up," asked the Congress even as former finance minister P Chidambaram said the financial frauds were taking place in one sector - jewellery - and all persons involved belong to one state - Gujarat.

While the Congress has been targeting the Modi government for "allowing" diamond merchants Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi to "flee" the country, the BJP has hit back claiming that the scam has its origins in the UPA government.
