HC asks CRPF to pay Rs 5-lakh compensation to cop's wife

Alarmelu Mangai, married to a CRPF constable posted in Tripura, was allegedly assaulted and humiliated by some local policemen and CRPF men a few years back. The reason: she   had left her CRPF quarters here for her neighbour Bagawan’s house. Bagawan, a relative of her husband and a CRPF constable in Chennai,  had invited her to his daughter’s birthday.  

But, the duo met with a shocking experience later. At midnight, the group of cops  barged into his house and  abused Alarmelu for alleged ‘illegal intimacy’ with Bagawan, a widower as well. She was dragged out of the house and taken to a nearby police station for questioning. The host and the children (of both) were taken to another station and released later.

Traumatised by the incident, Alarmelu moved the Madras High Court saying she was subjected to “untold humiliation and had to face disgrace” in society since then. Her husband in Tripura also ‘abandoned’ her after this episode. She also charged the cops with outraging her modesty following the incident.

The accused lower-level cops in their defense said they had only “raided” the house after getting complaints from neighbours in the CRPF quarters that the petitioner (Alarmelu) was visiting Bagavan’s house “at odd hours”.
