Last Updated 02 April 2018, 14:36 IST

Union Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh, who returned from Iraq on Monday with bodies of 38 Indians, on Monday said the workers had gone to Iraq through illegal agents.

He appealed to the people to refrain from sending their children abroad through unfair means, playing into the hands of unscrupulous elements, as the promises made by travel agents generally don't come to fruition.

He also said the Ministry of External Affairs maintained contact with the Iraqi army continuously and located the remains of the deceased.

After that, on the basis of DNA reports, the families of the youth were identified leading to the mortal remains being brought to India.

He further revealed that the DNA of one Indian didn't match fully, which is why his remains could not be brought back home.

On the issue of compensation, he said, "This is not something as easy as distributing biscuits. Do you understand? it's about life and death. How will I decide on compensation right now?"

He then said, "This is not a game of football. Both state and central governments are sensitive. The ministry had asked the families for the details of their members who can be given jobs, etc. We will review".
