PM to fast tomorrow over ruckus in House

Last Updated 10 April 2018, 19:00 IST

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will observe a day-long fast on Thursday with BJP MPs in protest against disruptions in Parliament, but he will be at work while party chief Amit Shah will join protesters in Hubballi.

The fast by BJP MPs was announced by Modi last Friday, the last day of the Budget session, to protest against the disruption of Parliament and accused the Congress of taking the lead.

Modi will fast while carrying out his official work. He is also scheduled to visit Chennai to inaugurate the Defence Expo.

Shah will be in Karnataka on Thursday as part of the campaigning for the state Assembly elections. A BJP statement said he will take part in a protest organised in Hubballi for "some time".

Countering the Opposition narrative that the party is anti-Dalit, the BJP will also observe the birth anniversary of Jyotiba Phule on April 11 as Samta Divas (equality day). Modi will address the MPs and interact with some of them. On April 14, BJP MPs will organise events to mark the birth anniversary of Dalit icon Bhimrao Ambedkar.

Modi had accused the Congress of taking parliamentary proceedings "to a new low" with its conduct.
