Henin grabs title in style

It was the Belgian's first tournament on clay, her favoured service on which she has won four French Open titles, since her return in January following a 19-month break.

Henin, runner-up at Brisbane and the Australian Open in January, won 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, three weeks before the start of Roland Garros.

Her last appearance at the French Open was in 2007 when she won her fourth title there. Meanwhile, at the Italian Open in Rome, unseeded Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic knocked out Vera Zvonareva of Russia in the first round.

Fourteenth seed Nadia Petrova of Russia advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Tathiana Garbin of Italy.
