Jawan shot dead by UP cops, family cries foul

 While family members of the deceased, identified as Kuldeep Singh of Rajputana Rifles, alleged that the encounter was ‘fake’, Additional Director General of UP Police Brijlal claimed that Singh was killed when a police party, which was chasing him, came under fire and retaliated.

Police said that Singh and another person had hired the car from Mathura railway station posing as passengers on Saturday night. They later threw the driver out of the car near Khurja and fled with the vehicle.

Following information provided by the driver, a police party intercepted the car and asked the occupants to stop but it sped on. On being chased, the police party was fired upon and a policemen also suffered bullet injuries.

On retaliatory fire, one of the occupants was hit twice while the other managed to escape, police said, adding, that the injured was taken to a hospital but was pronounced brought dead. A pistol and some live cartridges were recovered from his possession. A resident of UP’s Aligarh district, Kuldeep was on a two-months leave.

The family members said he had left his house on Friday morning to purchase some goods.
