Muralitharan, 38, who is also the team’s vice captain, has made “significant progress” and is recovering from a groin injury picked up during last Friday’s opening game against New Zealand, which Sri Lanka lost by two wickets.

Sri Lanka Cricket on Monday said the off-spinner had been “advised to rest for two or three weeks.” “Murali has begun his running programme paving the way for some light bowling shortly,” team physiotherapist Tommy Simsek said in a statement released by Sri Lanka Cricket in Colombo.

“Muralitharan is to remain in the West Indies after making significant progress. The team support staff are keeping an eye on Murali’s improvement.”
