Jumbo census from May15

The census will be carried out on ‘line transect method’ followed for tiger census. The number of elephants spotted will be recorded on the first day while their number would be estimated on the basis of pug marks and excreta, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Vijay Mohan Raj told Deccan Herald.

As many as 38 intersections were identified for tiger census and out of which 20 will be selected for elephant census. A total of 150 staff including Forest officials and volunteers will take part in the exercise.

The elephant census carried out in 2007 had revealed presence of 200 pachyderms in Bhadra Reserve Forest, he said.
