According to the police, the doctors did not preserve the viscera of Nirupama, who was in her early stages of pregnancy at the time of her death. The loss of this evidence was a setback to the probe, they said.

“The medical officers showed unnecessary haste in disposing of the body and did not preserve the viscera. Questions are being raised over the postmortem report that concluded that Nirupama was smothered to death, but was silent on whether any injury was found on her,” said an officer, requesting anonymity.

“As we have no physical evidence, we are left to rely on circumstantial evidence,” he added.
On Saturday, the police  lodged a case against Nirupama’s boyfriend, Priyabhanshu, under Section 376 (rape), 306 (abetment of suicide), 420 (cheating) and 506 (intimidation), following the order of chief judicial magistrate on the plea of Nirupama’s mother, Sudha Pathak.

Sudha, who was arrested on May 2 on the charge of murdering her daughter, attended the last rites of Nirupama on Sunday, after the local court released her on parole.

Meanwhile, state DGP Neyaz Ahmed sought a report over the matter from the Koderma police. A police team, led by sub-inspector Shiv Prakas Singh, also interrogated at least three friends of Nirupama at Delhi, where she worked for a business daily.
