2,833 GPs go to polls today

 An electorate of 1.25 crore will decide the fortunes of 1.15 lakh candidates in fray for 40,351 Gram Panchayat seats. Polling will be held between 7 am and 5 pm.
As many as 3,938 candidates have been elected unopposed.

State Election Commission Secretary D K Ravindranath said preparations for the smooth conduct of the polls have been completed. As many as 81,000 polling officials have been deployed.

Polling will be held in 16,064 booths, of which 4,539 have been declared sensitive and 3,200 as hyper-sensitive.

Nearly 19,000 police personnel of various ranks are deployed for election bandobust duties in addition to armed police personnel.

More security

Additional security measures have been taken in naxal affected areas.

 Districts that will go to polls during second phase include Mysore, Chikmagalur, Dakshina Kannada, Hassan, Kodagu, Mandya, Chamarajnagar, Belgaum, Bijapur, Haveri, Bagalkot, Uttara Kannada, Dharwad, Gadag, Udupi (Kundapur taluk).

Repolling

Repolling will be held in 24 polling stations in various districts which went to polls during phase one.

Counting of votes will be taken up at all taluk headquarters on May 17.
