Jail search turns violent, 8 cops injured

According to sources, a team of eight policemen, led by ACP Sanjeev  Patil and CPI Vijay Biradar, came to inspect the cells in the jail following complaints that drugs and liquor were being supplied to inmates. As the team was on its duty, the inmates attacked police personnel with clubs and stones, leaving Head Constable G S Dhothikal and constable Suresh seriously injured. CPI Vijay Biradar and other five constables also sustained minor injuries.

Sources told Deccan Herald that nearly 50-odd undertrials were involved in the incident. It is learnt that the jail authorities remained mute spectators even as the police were being attacked, and failed to rush in additional forces.

The injured policemen have been shifted to a private hospital. The condition of Dhothikal is said to be critical. Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissioner Raghvendra Auradkar and DCP Bhatkurki rushed to the spot. Nearly 300 policemen surrounded the Central Jail  and brought the situation under control.

Luxury facilities

Later, speaking to mediapersons, Auradkar said the police had received information that ganja, mobile phones and Liquor were being supplied to some inmates in the jail. A team was formed to search the jail.

During the search the police seized 15 liquor bottles, two cell phones and three SIM cards. The operation will continue, he added. According to sources, some undertrials, who are aides of underworld dons are enjoying luxury facilities at the jail.
