The last date to file nomination is May 31 with members of the Legislative Assembly forming the electoral college in the biennial polls to the Upper House. The BJP, with a strength of 116 MLAs, can send four members of the Council. The party is likely to finalise its candidates on May 28.

As many as 29 first preference votes are required to elect each candidate. The Congress can send two candidates to the Upper House. The JD(S), having 27 members in the Assembly, can send one candidate but only with the support of the Congress.

A tie-up between the Congress and the JD(S) is yet to be finalised. If there are more than seven candidates in fray after the last day for withdrawal of nominations, then elections will be held on June 10. Counting will be held on the same day.
