Brother of BSP legislator in honour killing case

Last Updated 26 May 2010, 17:25 IST

The brother of a BSP MLA has been arrested on Tuesday from Hamirpur district, 20 kms from here, for allegedly killing his daughter and her lover to preserve family honour.

According to the police, Ramesh, the brother of Bahujan Samaj Party MLA Dhuram Chaudhary, first killed his daughter Priyanka’s lover, Santosh, and then hacked her to death.

While Santosh’s body was retrieved from a field on May 16, hers, which was thrown into the Betwa river, is yet to be traced.

Santosh, a school teacher from Kheda where Ramesh lived, used to give private tuitions to Priyanka when he fell in love with her.

According to the police, Ramesh felt his family honour was at stake when he found the duo together about a week ago. He, with two others, took Santosh to a flour mill and strangulated him. After this, Priyanka was hacked to death.

Heinous acts

Notorious for honour killings, western Uttar Pradesh recently saw the murder of two teenaged lovers in full public view in Farrukhabad district.

Such heinous acts have the approval of the all-powerful caste panchayats. They even go to extend of issuing death sentences to couples, whose love is not favoured by their parents.
“Such marriages can not be allowed until the parents are in their favour,” said a caste panchayat chief from the region recently.
