Speaking at a seminar on coffee organised by Bangalore Agriculture University, Kodagu Coffee Growers Federation, Kodagu Planters Association at Crystal court in Madikeri on Tuesday, he said “Kodagu is agrarian society. No alternative crops to coffee, cardamom, pepper, horticulture, floriculture, apiculture can grow in the district. However, owing to the steep fall in coffee price, shortage of labourers, the growers are in distress. In this background, growers should think of stabilising the price.”
He said there is good international market for coffee from Kodagu. Growers should maintain the quality. Apart from quality, the growers should make use of the latest technologies to get high yield,” he suggested.
MLC S G Medappa said “if growers do not maintain the quality, then they can not improve their economic condition. All the cardamom growing areas in Somwarpet taluk have been converted into coffee plantation. In spite of the good price, the economic condition of the growers have not improved.”
Agriculture University Marketing and Maintenance division Head Dr P K Mandanna said coffee should be popularised like tea in the national market. ‘Caffe culture’ will help in the growth of the industry.
In the technical session, Speciality Coffee Association President Ashok Kurian said “small growers should also maintain quality to get good price in the market.”
AMCAD Director Chethan Ram spoke on loss control. He said “nothing is permanent in this world. One should develop self confidence and overcome the defeat.”
Coffee Growers Federation President M W Ayyappa inaugurated the seminar. Coffee Board former member B B Subbaiah compered the programme.

Get control over market: Nanaiah

Madikeri: By maintaining the quality and increasing the domestic consumption of coffee, growers should try to get control over the market, said former minister and MLC M C Nanaiah.

Speaking at a seminar on coffee organised by Bangalore Agriculture University, Kodagu Coffee Growers Federation, Kodagu Planters Association at Crystal court in Madikeri on Tuesday, he said “if a entrepreneur like Siddarth could get market for coffee all over the country, why not growers of Kodagu expand the market for coffee.”

In the last two to three years, the coffee price has been stabilised. In case if there is steep fall in the price of coffee, what will be the condition of our growers.
Why we are not thinking of alternative crops? he asked.
