A total of 21 people of Surpur taluk were charred to death beyond their recognition in the accident.

The bodies of Malamma Devappa of Parasanahalli and Shivaleela Veeresh of Kalladevanahalli are yet to be identified. There were two bodies in the mortuary at Challakere - one of a 7-year-old girl and another of a woman. The daughter of Malamma has also been killed in the accident.

Trouble began as the families of both Malamma and Shivaleela claimed the lone woman body. Already numbed by deaths, the grief of family members knew no bounds as they had to battle for bodies of their near and dear ones.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Kavita Mannikeri told Deccan Herald that the samples of the girl’s body have been sent for DNA tests and the outcome would determine the family she belongs to. According to sources, the body of Shivaleela is yet to be traced.
