Pavanraje was shot dead along with his driver near Panvel in Navi Mumbai in June 2006. The cops had, reportedly, picked up clues pointing fingers at Padmasinh, but no arrests were made for the past two years.
It was only after the victim's family approached the Bombay HC regarding the case, the court had asked the CBI to probe. After the CBI took over, several key arrests were made, leading to the arrest of NCP president Sharad Pawar's right hand man in the state politics. The CBI is expected to inquire into the role of senior IPS officers involved in the case. The CBI, while seeking Padmasinh's custody, told the court that the two arrested accused — Mohan Shukla and Parasmal Jain — had claimed that they were paid 'supari' (contract money) by Patil to eliminate Nimbalkar.
