Day college, evening classes or open university?

Studying In India
Last Updated 09 June 2010, 10:40 IST

Dear Sir,

I  have completed PUC with an aggregate of 45 per cent. I would like to pursue BCA. What are the job prospects after three years?

Nitish Kumar

Dear Nitish,

Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) is a three-year, recognised course offered by many colleges all over the state. Admission is not very difficult. Many students interested in computers but who cannot take up engineering, opt for it.  BCA gives you a basic understanding of the various applications, languages and programmes, but by itself it may not get you a high-paying job.  If you are ready to commit yourself to higher studies (preferably a three-year MCA), then you can do well.

Dear Sir,
I have completed 2nd PUC. I want to become a homeopath. But my parents aren’t supportive of the idea. They insist I take up ayurveda instead of homeopathy. Homeopathy has been my long-cherished dream. Please guide me.

Lakshmi

Dear Lakshmi,

It is very important that you study a stream of medicine in which you have a personal belief and commitment, otherwise you will not be effective as a physician.  Currently, both homeopathy and ayurveda are gaining popularity. Even if ayurveda can get you better openings, do try and convince your parents if you have understood the homeopathy stream, have used it and have a strong belief in it. Homeopathy also has various MD options whereby you can specialise later.

Dear Sir,

Please suggest institutes which offer a Diploma in Electrical & Electronics Engineering through distance education/correspondence. I am a resident of Bangalore.

Mahesh Babu

Dear Mahesh Babu,

Diploma in engineering is not offered through correspondence as it requires practical training and lab work.  If you have completed PUC with PCM, then you are eligible to study engineering through correspondence, either at Institution of Engineers, India (ieiksc@dataone.in) which offers an AMIE equivalent to a BE, or from universities like IGNOU.

Dear Sir,

I just found out that I have earned an A1 in Science and A2 in Math in my Class 10 board exam. I am interested in engineering, biology and animation. I’m attending coaching classes to crack the IIT exam in two years. What are my options after PCMB or PCMC?

Jaidev J D

Dear Jaidev,

Your career selection should be done not only on the basis of the subjects that you like, but also the type of lifestyle you wish to have and the work that you will be doing in a particular field. Other than engineering and medicine, there are many courses in life sciences (which involve the study of biology) such as agriculture, horticulture, dairy, fisheries, nutrition, paramedical, pharmacy, biotechnology, etc. It may be better if you take up PCMB, but do not get into IIT coaching unless you are very clear that you would like to pursue engineering.  Spend more time in selecting the right career and then begin your training.
