Swimming pool awaits facelift

However, several hindrances are coming in its way for inauguration. A swimming pool in Man’s compound is crying for attention.

The swimming pool lacks maintenance. The water pipes have been rusted. Though SAI girls hostel is situated near the Man’s Compound, the swimming pool is not used. For the past several years, the swimming pool remains unused. Apathy and negligence of the officials and elected representatives marks the deplorable condition of the pool. An indoor and outdoor stadium is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 4 crore near Man’s compound. Sports department has already given its nod for the work.

The state-of-the art stadium will ready within two years. However, none of the officials have paid attention to the swimming pool which is situated adjacent to the stadium.
Athletes from Kodagu have made their names in the international level. Kodagu has been giving lot of support to hockey. To give impetus to sports, government started the construction of stadium, hockey field.

General Thimmaiah district stadium will get 400 metres track, chess, table tennis. Basket ball court adjacent to the stadium. If the authorities give a facelift to the swimming pool, it will benefit several aspiring swimmers.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Youth Service and Sports department Assistant Director Suresh Kandavar said “we had sent a proposal for the rejuvenation of swimming pool in 2006. Now the department is getting ready to give a facelift to the pool.”

An action plan of Rs 1.76 crore was prepared for the construction of swimming pool. However, the present pool can be repaired at an estimated cost of Rs 50 lakh, said expert Dr M R Mohith. The experts will visit the district to inspect the pool soon. Later, we will prepare a blueprint and send it to the government. Funds are available 12th Finance commission,” he added.
