Ex-minister in Orissa gets 2-year jail in graft case

Das, a founder member of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and a former president of the party’s women’s wing was dropped from the cabinet when a corruption case surfaced in Woman and Child Development Department headed by her. She later joined the Congress. The state vigilance wing, which inquired into the case, had filed a charge sheet against her subsequently.

Pronouncing his verdict, the judge of the special vigilance court, Santosh Mohanty, also imposed a fine of Rs 4,000 on the former minister. A local businessman, who had also been chargesheeted in the same case, has been awarded a rigorous imprisonment of one year.
