Govt goofs in ore export notification

Last Updated 27 July 2010, 16:51 IST

An order issued on Monday prohibits export of iron ore from Belekeri, Tadadi, Honnavar, Bhatkal, Kundapur, Malpe, Hangarkatte, Old Mangalore, Padubidre and Karwar ports. Of the ten, the Central Board of Customs and Excise has notified only three - Belekeri, Karwar and Old Mangalore ports - for export.

The rest have not been notified by the Board for export or import. “If there is any export from these ports, it is nothing but smuggling,” a senior officer of the Customs Department said.

Asked on the logic behind banning export from ports not notified, Director of Ports, Capt Swamy said: “These are all notified as ports by the State Government”.
He made it clear that ban is only on export of iron ore and it does not apply to other goods. Karwar and Old Mangalore ports had been notified for export and import of all goods while the Belekeri port had been notified only for export of iron ore.
