Muniyamma (65) and her family, including two grandchildren had a close shave with death. Their house was inundated with rain water as a nearby drain (Kuvempu Nagar, Second Cross) has been blocked for repair. As a result, rain water gushed into the house. The house had water upto ankle height late in the evening even as Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike staff demolished a part of the house to drain the water. It is learnt that motor was used to pump water.

“I grabbed my grandchildren just in time, or else they could have drowned right here inside my house,” Muniyamma told Deccan Herald, showing her waterlogged house.

Drain blocked for repair
Muniyamma and her son Raju attribute the incident to blocking of the drain outside their house.

“It has been over 45 days since the drain was blocked they have dug up the road ahead in order to construct the drains. But the construction work is yet to be completed,”  they alleged. They said there was no such problem earlier as rain water used to flow down the drain.

The Palike, however, has opened the drain up after the incident which also brought some relief to the residents of the road.

The full stretch of Kuvempu Road was inundated with water, almost up to knee level from afternoon to evening, the residents said.

The evening showers in the City also resulted in waterlogging in several areas of the City. The areas near Jayadeva Hospital (Bannerghatta Road), Tannery Road, Wilson Garden were flooded with rain water.
