While state government is yet to appoint his successor, the name of IAS officer C R Chikkamath was doing the rounds on Friday.  Hegde assumed charge as the State election commissioner on June 21, 2004. Earlier, Hegde had served in the Law Department. Hegde was instrumental in conducting one cycle of elections for the three-tier panchayat institutions and urban local bodies in the state.

However, it will be Hegde’s successor who will be conducting the forthcoming elections to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

Hedge said conducting the gram panchayat elections was the most challenging during his stint. He also had to fight several court cases to ensure the elections are held on time. He also played a lead role in the delimitation of Assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies. “I have discharged my duties with honesty and to the best of my abilities”, he said.
