The long and short of it

The gorgeous girls of Jyoti Nivas Pre University College are not just good in studies and extra-curricular activities, but know how to strike a style statement too. Ask them what’s in vogue at present, and they come up with an array of answers — chunky accessories and colourful bags to name a few. One such fashion item that is creating waves across the JNC campus is a long top teamed with a pair of colourful tights or leggings.

“Loose tops or long t-shirts worn with tights look very stylish and are extremely comfortable,” says Teena, a student of commerce. Adds Sahar, an arts’ student, “Tights go well with long kurtas as well.”

This combination comes in handy also because of the dress code of the college. “We have a dress code on all days except Saturdays. So a long top worn with tights looks decent and stylish, and you don’t break any of the college rules either,” says Leah, a commerce student. Explaining the two different types of leggings, Sahar says, “One is made of cotton and the other is a transparent one.”

What are the accessories that one should go for with these tops and tights? “Bangles and chains,” say all of them. “Anklets look pretty with them too,” says Sahar, as she sports colourful anklets on her feet.

Sling bags look cool too, they say. Rochelle, an arts student, speaks of the shoes that match these long tops and tights — “Ankle or knee-length boots look good.” But boots are not a viable option on campus, so most girls are seen wearing ballerina shoes and flat ‘chappals’ that look stunning.

When you buy these long tops, go for bright and funky colours like purple, grey and green. “Black leggings are totally cool as they go well with tops of all colours,” say all of them.

The girls advise you to not go for heavy make-up when you sport a long top with leggings. Basic eye make-up, like kajal or eyeliner along with a light-coloured lip gloss would do. And a major point to be kept in mind while sporting this cool look is to not wear leggings with short tops. “The chudidar leggings go well only with kurtas so it would be a big mistake to wear them with Western tops,” says Leah. Adds Rochelle, “And those on the heavier side should wear longer tops.”

The girls also speak about ‘jeggings’, which are made of the same material as leggings, but look like jeans. “These are available in all the stores in shades of blue and black,” says Leah. “Besides, you get good quality jeggings for as less as Rs 200, as opposed to a pair of  jeans for which you end up paying at least Rs 1000,” says Rochelle.

Where do you get good long tops and leggings in the City? “Apart from the leading brand outlets, you get really good tops and leggings at Tibetan Plaza and Commercial Street,” informs Rochelle.
