Students hurl eggs, tomatoes at Montek

Last Updated 28 August 2010, 17:01 IST

The SFI activists, who were protesting against the UPA government’s “abject failure” to contain price rise, were waiting outside the premises of a hall in the college where Ahluwalia was addressing a national seminar on economics.

The moment he was leaving the college after the seminar ended, the students targeted their “missiles” (eggs and tomatoes) at him. But Ahluwalia, who seemed unruffled by the protest, luckily escaped the hit.

“They are students and naturally, they have every right to protest,” he told reporters.
The protesters waved black flags and shouted “Montek, go back”, “Down down, UPA” as they scuffled with the security personnel. Another lesser known students’ union, USDF, held placards reading: “We don’t want atomic power, but want purchasing power.”

Students said the government’s polices have promoted socio-economic inequality and responsible for the soaring food prices. Nobody has been arrested so far, the police said.
