CCI raps film chamber

Last Updated 16 September 2010, 19:06 IST

Issuing an interim order in favour of Reliance Media Works Limited, which had moved the Commission, CCI has scheduled the final hearing for September 21, until when the interim order will be in effect.

As per the existing rules of the Chamber, a non-Kannada cinema can only be screened in 24 theatres/halls. Reliance had challenged the restriction and moved the Commission sometime last month terming it unfair.

In the interim order dated September 9, the CCI said that the Chamber was in a dominant position in Karnataka and was imposing “unfair,” “discriminatory” restrictions on the complainant’s films.

The order also restrained the Chamber from taking any action and from imposing restrictions, direct or indirect, to prevent any producer/distributor in relation to supply of prints of the films to Reliance.

Officials from the Chamber were unavailable for comments.
