CBSE teachers yet to get new evaluation mode

Last Updated 20 September 2010, 16:35 IST

The Board had introduced the new mode of evaluation which involves numerous group tasks, projects and assignments instead of a single written test at the end of the year
But several school managements claim that they are not yet clear about how to wrap up the assignments before the day is over. “There is a lot of confusion about the new mode of evaluation. Schools are helpless and don’t know how to finish the projects during limited time at school,” said the director of a prominent CBSE school.

CBSE has introduced various reforms such as replacing marks with grades and continuous and comprehensive evaluation last year.

According to the teachers, even parents have not understood the concept of CCE well. “Several parents want written test for their wards. They want their performance in black and white. The new concept of comprehensive analysis has to be indoctrinated in to the minds of parents,” said Manjula Raman, principal of Army Public School.

The spokesperson of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan was non-committal on the issue. However, he stressed the need for workshops. Premier institutions such as Kendriya Vidyalayas have also conducted a series of workshops for teachers.

“We had conducted training sessions only for select teachers. Later, the Sangathan decided to conduct more training sessions,” said DTS Rao, Assistant Commissioner of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan.

To deal with these issues, the Board will conduct a series of interactive sessions with the Chairman of CBSE soon. The board has also published descriptive manuals for teachers to understand the concept of CCE.
