On the same lines, Dr G Shankar Family Trust and Mogaveera Youth Association of Kundapur have been arranging blood donation camps successfully since three years. It all started with a small dream of Ambalapadi’s G Shankar Family Trust to create awareness among the youth about the significance of blood donation. The small initiative taken up in the district has now turned big, with hundreds of people participating in the camp, eagerly waiting to donate their blood.

Camp’s success story

On the very first year of the camp, i.e., in 2008-2009, as much as 1,200 unit blood was collected while the quantity reached 2,000 units in the year 2009-2010. “This year the camp will be held on September 26 in Kundapur and we expect to collect more than 2,500 units of blood this time,” says Dr G Shankar.

The association members have not restricted their service to blood donation camps, but also they have made it a point to rush to the local hospital, whenever the need for blood arises. This initiative has in fact motivated many from the society, prompting a good number of youth to donate blood in various parts of taluk. In a recent heart touching incident, a woman was saved from the death bed as 10 youth from Mogaveera Association donated 10 bottles of blood in order to save her life.

Informative sessions and talks by expert doctors are also organised on the day of blood donation camp, so as to motivate more number of youth to be a part of blood donation in the long run.

Meanwhile, ‘health cards’ are provided by Shankar Family Trust in association with KMC hospital Manipal, to the family members of blood donors to avail special health benefits and facilities.

This year, the camp’s valedictory function will be held at R N Shetty Hall of Bhandarkar’s College at 11 am. Dr G Shankar will inaugurate the function, Manipal University VC Dr G K Prabhu, Mogaveera Association President Sathish Naik and others will be the guests.
