Jharkhand Assembly Elections 2024: How did Congress perform in 2019 polls?

The last assembly polls held in Jharkhand was in 2019. The legislative assembly elections were held from November 30 to December 20, 2019, to elect the 81 members of the 5th Jharkhand Legislative Assembly. The results were declared on December 23, 2019.

Congress stitched up a pre-poll alliance with JMM and RJD to contest from 75 constituencies — Congress from 31, JMM from 43 and RJD from 7 — to defeat the incumbent BJP government in the state.

When the dust from the poll fray settled, the Congress-JMM-RJD combine was the clear victor, securing 47 seats out of the 81 in the assembly.

In contrast, BJP and other parties, including independents, secured 34 seats in the state assembly.

The detailed tally saw the Indian National Congress with 16 seats, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) with 30 seats, Rashtriya Janata Dal - 1 seat, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha - 3 seats, Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation - 1 seat, Nationalist Congress Party - 1 seat and the Independents with 2 seats.

BJP secured 25 seats out of the 79 seats it contested while the All Jharkhand Students Union secured 2 seats.

JMM went on to form the government with Congress' support with JMM chief, Hemant Soren, as Jharkhand's next CM.

After the elections, JVM(P) chief and Former Chief Minister of Jharkhand Babulal Marandi also extended the support of his party to the Congress-JMM-RJD combine, giving it an even larger majority in the assembly.

On 24 December 2019, Hemant Soren along with the alliance partners, met Governor Draupadi Murmu and staked claim to form the government.
