Soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo became the most followed person on Instagram on Monday. Ronaldo surpassed Singer Selena Gomez with 144.4 million followers, while she has 144.3 million followers.

At the time of the story's publication, Ronaldo had 14,44,47,922 followers while Selena had 14,43,62,468.

This sudden shift comes right after the singer took a month's break from the social media. "Taking a social media break. Again," Selena wrote in an Instagram post from September.
Singer-actor Selena Gomez has decided to take some time off from social media so that she can ''live her life.'' The 26-year-old former Disney star recently returned to Instagram after a brief break from the app but has decided to step back again.

Her last post before she went on a break had the caption: "Mood laugh out loud (I was looking at myself in the mirror -like an idiot) Update: taking a social media break. Again. As much as I am grateful for the voice that social media gives each of us, I am equally grateful to be able to step back and live my life present to the moment I have been given.
"Kindness and encouragement only for a bit! Just remember- negative comments can hurt anybody's feelings" she wrote alongside a picture of herself.

While Ronaldo's photo when he surpassed Selena was that of his workout.

Selena is seeking treatment after an emotional breakdown in hospital following "tough" few weeks. According to the People magazine, the 26-year-old former Disney star was hospitalised twice within the last few weeks, both times for a low white blood cell count, which can be a side effect for kidney transplant patients."She has had a tough few weeks and the panic attack in the hospital was the tipping point. She realised she needed to seek additional help for her ongoing emotional issues. She's surrounded by close family and has a lot of support. She's doing better now and is seeking treatment on the East Coast," a source said.

Gomez is undergoing dialectical behaviour therapy, a therapy method designed to help try to identify, and then change, negative thinking and behavioural patterns, the source added.
The news comes a few weeks after Gomez announced that she is taking a break from social media.
