Kollywood actor Suriya's popular film Soorarai Pottru is one among the 366 movies that are in the Oscars race under the 'Best Picture' category this year. The list has been compiled based on the revised eligibility rules that had to be implemented in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Unlike previous years, films that released digitally due to the lockdown too were considered this time around.

The Malayalam movie Jallikattu was previously selected as India's official entry to the Oscars but failed to make the cut despite creating a fair deal of buzz internationally.

The Sudha Kongara-directed Kollywood biggie was produced by 2D Entertainment and featured Suriya in a new avatar. Soorarai Pottru was inspired by the life of Air Deccan founder GR Gopinath and touched upon some of his personal struggles. It was, however, never promoted as a biopic as it had plenty of commercial elements and a fictional storyline. The film starred Aparna Balamurali as the leading lady and marked her first collaboration with the Si 3 star. The cast included Tollywood legend Mohan Babu, Bollywood actor Paresh Rawal and Karunas.

Soorarai Pottru was originally supposed to release in theatres but that did not happen due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It ultimately released on Amazon Prime Video, receiving rave reviews from critics.

Suriya, meanwhile, is going through a busy phase on the work front. The mass hero was supposed to collaborate with director Hari for Aruvaa but the film was put on hold. He is set to team up with Visaranai helmer Vetrimaaran for a political drama titled Vaadivaasal, which features him in the role of a politician. The film is expected to hit the screens sometime next year.

Suriya recently tested positive for Covid-19 but recovered in a matter of days. His brother actor Karthi thanked fans for their support, adding that they are an important part of their life.
