Dr R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, principal of Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management; Prakhyath Rai, faculty coordinator, assistant professor of Information Science; and Arjun Suvarna, chairperson of Sahyadri Open Source Community, addressed the crowd.

The main event started off with a workshop followed by an 18-hour Hackathon, where around 12 students gathered as teams and worked on projects under domains of education, entertainment and productivity to help innovate and enhance the current system. The projects were then made open sourced through GitHub paving way to new open source contributors.

Hacktoberfest is a month-long celebration of open source software run by DigitalOcean in partnership GitHub and Twilio. It was open to everyone in the global community. It encourages meaningful contributions to open source softwares hosted on GitHub, for beginners and veterans alike, leading to personal growth, professional opportunities and community building.
